Frequently Asked Questions

No, we do not recommend leaving Canary Fubuki dahlia tubers in the ground over winter. Dahlias are not hardy, so they can’t withstand frost. If you do leave them in the ground, the roots will freeze, get damaged or destroyed, and eventually rot away.

This is what you should do before the first frost signs: cut the Canary Fubuki dahlia down to 6 inches, dig it up, and plant it in a small pot. Bring this pot with the dahlia tuber indoors and store it in a cool and dark place like a basement or a garage.

Unless, you live in an area with a warm climate, like USDA zone 8 or higher, then it is possible to leave them year-round in the ground. The soil will provide enough protection for the tubers.

It all starts with the planting preparation. Pick a spot in your garden or on your patio where the Canary Fubuki dahlia receives approximately 6 hours of sun. Dig a hole of 5-6 inches, drop the dahlia tuber in it and cover it up with soil and leave the top 2 inches exposed. Make sure to use well-drained soil, because if the tubers get ‘wet feet’ they will rot. If you plant them in a pot or container, make sure it has drainage holes in them.

After planting, water it thoroughly and fertilize it. When Canary Fubuki starts to grow, water it once or twice a week and fertilize it every 2-4 weeks. Especially the watering and fertilizing part is important! If you have any further questions, please contact us.

What’s in a name? Canary Fubuki is a Fubuki Dahlia. It is also known as the Fimbriata dahlia, which means ‘spiky’, because Fubuki dahlias have fimbriated (spiky), double petals. They tend to grow to a height of 40 inches with large blooms, so it is definitely recommended to stake these lovely Fubuki Dahlias.

Despite the height and the large, heavy blooms, they always stand straight up because of their strong stems. That’s why they’re so attractive and showy because they will stand out in the garden. Fubuki dahlias are available in different colors. We from Dutch Flower Bulbs have them in our webshop in four different colors: yellow, white, pink and red.

At the start of fall and when the weather is cooling down, Canary Fubuki dahlias stop blooming. Dahlias are not hardy, so you have to remove them before the first signs of frost. The beauty of nature is that when it is too chilly for Canary Fubuki, it dies down and the energy and nutrients goes back to its tuber.

All you need to do is gently remove all the dead foliage and cut down the dead stalk till there is 6 inches left. This way it can store all its energy in the tuber. Then carefully dig and lift it up, cleanse it and transplant it to a pot or box with some dry compost. Store your Canary Fubuki dahlia tuber in a frost-free, dry and dark place such as the garage or the basement.
