Frequently Asked Questions

If we would tell that, then it would be no secret… Just kidding! Planting the Bodacious tubers the right way and taking care of them is the secret. And they love lots and lots of sunshine, they thrive in warm weather! So it is best to plant them in a sunny spot, preferably facing west or south. They are not very picky on soil, as long as it is well-drained and moistened, not waterlogged.

Plant the Bodacious dahlia tubers about 3-4 inches deep with the ‘eye’ facing upward. Cover them with a little bit of soil, but it is so important to leave the top 2-3 inches exposed. So do not bury them! Bodacious dahlias need consistent watering, but they do not like wet ‘feet’. This can sound like a lot of work, but trust us when we say it is not. If you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

If you live in a colder area with harsh winters, then you should at least wait till late spring. The best month (for colder climates) to grow Bodacious dahlias is when the chance of frost is gone, preferably in May - June.

Dahlias are absolutely not hardy, we know you want to plant them as soon as possible when you receive them, but it can be harmful if you plant them too soon. The perfect soil temperature is around 60-65°F. In the meantime, you can start your dahlia tubers in a pot and place them in a dark and cool place such as the basement or garage.

If you live in a warmer area, then the best month to grow Bodacous dahlias is in March-April.

If you take proper care of your Bodacious dahlias and plant them in the correct way, then you can keep them blooming. The proper way to plant and take care of them is:
• Make sure they have enough sun exposure because they love the sun and they thrive in the warm climate.
• Water regularly and keep the soil moistened, but not waterlogged. Water the Bodacious dahlia tubers a few times a week, especially in warmer climates. They need moistened soil, but they don’t like wet feet.
• Use fertilizer on a regular basis, especially during the growing season.
• Make a habit of removing dead or wilted flowers. By deadheading regularly you can encourage Bodacious to focus its energy on producing new blooms.
• When the first signs of frost come, cut back the Bodacious dahlia and remove all the foliage. By doing this, the Bodacious dahlia will store its energy back in the tuber to encourage healthy new growth in the spring.

Firstly you need to know why you should deadhead Bodacious dahlias. Let’s be clear that you only need to remove the dead blooms. This is to encourage the Bodacious dahlia to produce more and more new flowers. And also, dahlias are known for their colorful appearance, why would you want brown and dead blooms?

If you don’t deadhead Bodacious dahlias, this could cause the lifespan of flowers to be shorter and fewer in number. Plus, removing spent flowers can help to prevent Bodacious dahlias from falling down due to their top heavyweight. Some dahlia varieties are known for their tall appearance, so if you leave all the spent blooms on, they will fall down or break.
