    Frequently Asked Questions

Autumn Fairy needs consistent moisture, but they don’t like or need excessive amounts of water. This can lead to root rot and ultimately the death of the dahlia. It's important to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. A good thumb rule is to water the plant deeply when the top 2 inches of soil are dry (just feel this with your finger).

In general Dahlias need about an inch of water per week, either from rainfall or manual watering. In addition, it's very important to avoid watering the leaves and flowers directly as this can lead to disease problems.

The best month to plant Autumn Fairy Dahlia tubers is typically between April and June, depending on your climate and the timing of the last frost in your area. It is important to wait until the soil has warmed up to around 60-65°F before planting, as dahlias do not tolerate cold soil.

Additionally, planting too early can cause the tubers to rot before they have a chance to sprout. The ideal planting time will allow the tubers to establish a strong root system and shoot before the hottest summer temperatures arrive. We know you can’t wait to plant your dahlias, but please keep in mind that Dahlias are absolutely NOT hardy.

Dahlias can do well in either pots or in the ground. The answer lies in different factors, such as the location and the intended use of the Dahlia. If you live in an area with cold winter conditions, it is best to grow Autumn Fairy in pots and bring them inside to avoid frost and cold.

However, if you live in a warmer climate, it is a great idea to plant the Dahlia tubers in the ground. But, if you want to use the Autumn Fairy Dahlia as a focal point in your garden, then plant Autumn Fairy directly in the ground. If you have a small living space or want to grow the dahlia in a smaller area, a pot is the ideal choice.

This depends if the area you live in has a warm or cold climate. Dahlia tubers are absolutely not hardy. Autumn Fairy dahlias can be left in the ground in warmer climates where the ground does not freeze during winter.

In cold climates, the tubers should be dug up before the first hard frost and stored in a cool, dry place until spring. When planting the tubers in the spring, make sure to cut back any dead or diseased parts and place the tuber in the soil with the “eye” facing upward. With the proper care, your Dahlia comes back to life every year.

This question is only relatable if you live in an area with a cold climate. If your living area has a warm climate (USDA climate zones 8-10), then you can leave the tubers in the ground. To prepare the Autumn Fairy Dahlia for winter, follow these steps:

    • Wait until the first frost to cut back the foliage to about 6 inches from the ground.
    • Dig up the tubers with a garden fork, taking care not to damage them.
    • Brush off any loose soil and let the tubers air dry for a few days.
    • Store the tubers in a cool, dry place, such as a basement or garage.
    • Place the tubers in a container filled with peat moss.
    • Label the container with the variety of the dahlia and the date you stored it.

You can plant Autumn Fairy back in the garden when the signs of frost are gone.
