Frequently Asked Questions

To encourage Purple Gem dahlias to rebloom, it is important to deadhead the spent flowers regularly. Deadheading is the process of removing the old flowers before they form seeds, which encourages the plant to produce more blooms.

Once the plant has finished flowering for the season, cut back the stems to about 6 inches above the ground. If you live in an area with harsh, cold winters, lift up the tuber and store it in a cool and dry place until the next spring.

If you live in an area with a warm climate, such as USDA zone 8 or higher, then you’ll be fine leaving them in the ground. Cover the roots with a layer of mulch to protect them from the winter cold. In the spring, as the weather warms up, remove the mulch and start watering the plant regularly.

There could be a few reasons why your Purple Gem dahlias are not growing.

1. Firstly, dahlias need well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging. If the soil is heavy and doesn't drain well, the roots could be sitting in water and causing rot.
2. Secondly, dahlias need full sun, so make sure they are planted in an area with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
3. Thirdly, make sure you are not overwatering your dahlias, as this can also cause rot.
4. Fourth, check for any signs of pests or diseases, such as aphids or powdery mildew, which can also hinder growth.
5. Finally, make sure you don't plant your dahlias too early in Spring and don't forget to dig them up before the winter comes in.

If any of the above reasons do not apply to you or you need more advice, please do not hesitate to contact us.

To plant Purple Gem dahlias in the ground, start by selecting a sunny location with well-draining soil. Prepare the soil by loosening it with a garden fork and adding organic matter such as compost.

Dig a hole that is about twice the size of the dahlia tuber and plant it with the pointed end facing up, about 4-5 inches deep. Backfill the hole with soil and gently tamp it down. Water the dahlia thoroughly after planting and continue to water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
As the plant grows, provide support with stakes or a cage to prevent it from flopping over.

It is not per se necessary to soak Purple Gem before planting, but it does have a few advantages. Soaking can be especially beneficial if the tubers have been in storage for a long time, as they may have dried out and become less viable.

Soaking the tubers overnight in lukewarm water can help to rehydrate them and encourage the growth of new roots. Soaking can also help to soften the outer layer of the tuber, making it easier for shoots to emerge. Overall, soaking Purple Gem dahlias before planting can increase the chances of a successful and healthy growth of the plant.
